So... what exactly is the Marianne Theory?

About the Marianne Theory...

Just what the hell is it?

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

- Friedrich Nietzsche

The Marianne Theory is a short story that I wrote back in high school ( you can read it on this site's splash page if you haven't read it yet...). It was written in a very spontaneous way, and I never bothered to edit it or change anything in it. However, as flawed as the story was, I really liked how it turned out. I wrote it, read it a week afterwards, and shelved it in a box, not thinking about it for years and years.

A few months ago, near the end of the year 2000, I was looking through old stuff and found these crumpled messy papers and reread them again just for fun, and among the stories that I had unshelved was , you guesed it, "The Marianne Theory"...

So what exactly does the Marianne Theory mean to me? It means alot to me...

One way to interpret it is to compare it with history, wich consists of an endless waltlz of peace, war, and revolution... In certain periods, revolution takes more time than others, but it always comes down to those three steps. In short, history repeats itself constantly, just as it does for the narrator in the said story: we are trapped within the Marianne Theory even though we are quite aware of it fully by now. When will the last revolution come? When will peace be a constant rather than a phase? Probably never...

There is no escape from the Marianne Theory, human nature won't allow it... And it never will...

However, if we are truly careful, if we follow Nietzche's, perhaps the next era of peace will be one that lasts for awhile without the hyppocrisy that the one we are living through has right now. If we are to change the world, if we are to go through another revolution, we must not become the monster that we are fighting against. We must learn of past mistakes and stay true to ourselves for as long as possible. Human nature will without any doubt make us forget in time what we were fighting for, and turn us into the monsters that have been defeated in times past. But it would be nice to think that we will remember the tyrrany of the evils we are fighting against for at least a few generations before we revert to the state of monsters...

You cannot live outside of the Marianne theory, you cannot break its rules.. but perhaps, just perhaps, you can bend some of its rules even if it is only for a moment...
