Chapter 9

Talehn was startled at the emergence of the boy. He was obviously a child of the streets and his appearance reminded Talehn of one of the many reasons he had chosen to defy the Ministry.

When he was young--around the age of the boy walking in front of him--Talehn had known that he wanted to work with and study ether. It wasn't until after he had met Valeri that he realized how much suffering the interfaces endured, and how little the Ministry cared for human life.

Valeri was the center of his universe for two years. She bore the interface tests with an admireable courage and was often held up as an example of the typical interface subject to the public.

Talehn himself had no idea of the pain Valeri was experiencing--not until the day she had died in his arms. The other techs had taken his grief for dissapointment in the failed interface.

Then the vultures in the cloning department had come and taken her lifeless body for "genetic material." Cisia was one of Valeri's clones. As the quiet group walked in one of the cities many alleys Talehn vowed that Cisia would never suffer Valeri's fate.

The street urchin's voice broke through Talehn's thoughts. "We're here."

Anika stared increduously at the small opening. "We can't possibly fit."

Kuri was already moving through the duct.
