Chapter 26

After she finished heaving the non-existent contents of her stomach into the nearest trash can, Cisia stood and tried to straighten herself up.

A few feet down the alley she spotted what looked like two police officers, one was in a patrolman's uniform and the other was in some kind of body armor that was totally unfamiliar to her. Please don't let them recognize me, Cisia prayed.

She realized that her prayers went unanswered when the patrolman told his partner, "It's Cisia."

Cisia broke into a run. Adrenlaline rushed through her veins as she navigated the narrow pathways. She could hear the heavy booted feet of her pursuers following closely.

Paula nearly tripped over herself trying to keep up with Bryce. "Wait, why are you chasing that girl?"

"Now's not the time," Bryce threw over his shoulder. He knew that he should just let the poor girl escape but he didn't like the idea of leaving her running around alone on the streets, besides if Paula's proposal worked Cisia wouldn't need to be an interface anymore. Finally he got close enough to catch Cisia's arm. "I'm not trying to hurt you!"

When she spun around the girl's eyes glowed red. With a considerable effort her eyes returned to normal. "Please, let me go."

"I'm not going to take you in," Bryce tried to explain. "I have something else I need to take care of right now. I just wanted to warn you, there's a city-wide APB out on you, it'd be safer if you found someplace to hide."

"Don't believe him Cisia," the voice in her head whispered. "Let me take care of this."

Anika felt awful, this was the first time in seven years that she let Darian down. Why had that damn J-10 wore off so soon? And why was it so hard to find a working phone? "What does it take to find a phone around here?" she said aloud in frustration.

"Hey sweetheart!" Anika looked up to see a skinny, grungy adolescent in a Speed Demon jacket. Seeing that he had her attention, the cocky teen then proceeded to grab his crotch. "You can talk into this, honey."

"No class," Anika muttered under her breath, ignoring the kid's rude gestures. Suddenly, ten other bikers came out of the shadows to confront her.

A burly bearded man walked up to the youth and slapped the back of his head. "That's no way to talk to a lady, dipshit. How's it going Ani?"

Anika relaxed, but not much. "Hello Merrit."

"Now is that any way to greet an old friend? Come here and give me a hug."

Anika walked up and gave Merrit a hug. After all she owed him--if it hadn't been for him she never would have tried to steal Darian's wallet seven years ago.

"I'd love to stay and catch up on old times, Merrit, but I have to run."

"I know I don't need to tell you there's a contract out on you and Darian."

"Thanks for the heads up. I'll see you around."

"Sure thing, Ani."

Whew... that was close, Anika thought. If Merrit hadn't been around she would've had a situation on her hands.

Finally Lady Luck was on her side, Anika thought as she spotted a operational video phone.
