Chapter 29
By Shell97
The ribbed glass of the observation window left a slight impression on Kuri's fingertips. He hadn't realized how hard he had been pressing against the window as he watched the doctors trying to work on Mikan. Finally they stepped away from his little sister, somehow she looked even smaller on the large metal operating table.
Kuri tried to see what was going on in the room. Why had this happened? Mikan had been in stable condition a few seconds ago.
The admitting doctor approached. "I'm sorry there isn't anything more we can do. You can go to her now."
"Thank you." Kuri's voice was hollow and flat. Without Mikan what did he have to live for? If she didn't live what had he killed and begged for?
Kuri walked into the room and reached for her hand. Her skin felt cool and dry, all of her warmth was gone. "Don't leave me," Kuri whispered. "You're all I have."
The symbol on his wrist began to heat up. Kuri looked down and saw that it was glowing green. Kuri wished the weird mark would go away, it was just a grim reminder of his nightmares. He turned his attention back to his sister, if the doctors were right she didn't have much time left.
"Don't leave me," Kuri repeated like a chant. As he chanted the same three words silvery white threads emitted from his body...
Darian snapped the cel phone shut before turning to the men beside him. "Have you made your decision Sergeant?"
Nelson touched his mangled badge gingerly. His father and grandfather had been cops, good ones. That was probably why he and Mia had joined the force. The funny thing was, if Mia hadn't become a police officer she'd be alive today. "Count me in," he told Darian. "But just so we're clear, Lydon's mine."
"We're clear," the hunter said calmly.
Phoenix interjected. "What if I want a piece of him? He did try to cap me in the back, you know."
"Well he capped my sister in the back so I think I have priority," Nelson threw back at Phoenix.
"We don't have time to argue, we'll talk about this on our way to get the J-10." Darian stalked off irritated. The last thing he needed was to referee his two reluctant partners.
Phoenix and Nelson nodded to each other. As they walked off to Darian's safehouse Nelson threw his badge onto the asphalt behind him.
