Chapter 31
By Shell97
The dried blood on her face had once coursed through the veins of what had been, in the end, a very young, very frightened boy. The more Anika looked at the vermilion stains on her clothes and hands, the colder she felt inside. She touched the reddened pad of her index finger to her cheek and caught one of the tears she had been silently pouring out. The tear was cold. "But not as cold as my world," Anika thought as she stared at the body resting on her lap.
Even though she was emotionally distraught Anika could sense someone coming up behind her. Twisting her upper body she pointed her empty gun at the intruder, betting on him not knowing it was empty.
It was a good bet, she could tell that he had no idea the gun wasn't loaded by the way he jumped back. She knew that it was just Byrce but the shock of the nights events was still strong and she was unable to react for a second.
"Anika, it's me," he said.
Anika tucked the useless gun back under her jacket. Gently, she laid Merrit's broken body on the ground and stood. The concrete greedily soaked up his blood, reminding Anika of the new threat the planet posed. She turned back to Bryce. "We'd better get going before the cops show."
"You don't need to tell me that twice," Byrce replied.
As they walked away from the scene in silence, Anika could only hope that Merrit was in a better place.
