Chapter 34
By Shell97
Behind the same observation window from which Kuri had watched the doctors work on Mikan, one of the doctors was watching him.
The voyeur turned and motioned to a nearby nurse. "Call the interface department at the Ministry and tell them to get here ASAP." When he was assured of his message reaching the correct people he turned back to the window to look at the two children. The brother and sister were sleeping quite peacefully now and Dr. Correa felt a stab of guilt at what he was about to do.
Rationalizing, he told himself that he had no choice, without a working interface all of the patients in intensive care would be dead by sun-up. How fortutious that a mage would show up in their time of need.
A low whistle escaped Nelson's lips as Darian lead him to the car. The incandesent paint was as vibrant as a highly polished cabachon. "Don't you think we're going to attract a little too much attention in this beaut?" he asked Darian.
"Not really," Darian said as he retrived a remote from his pants pocket. Suddenly, the car's paint job changed into a glossy black.
Phoenix, who had been siting in the front passenger seat looked a little freaked by the car's impromptu color change. "You could give a guy some warning the next you decide to show off your toys," he told Darian peevishly when they entered the car.
"Aww, did the bad car scare you?" Nakano replied as he bit back his laughter.
"Is everything a friggin' joke to you? Grow up."
"Why don't you both grow up?" Darian was getting more than a little tired of their childish exchanges. He understood that Phoenix and Nakano were nervous but they didn't need to squabble over everything. He pressed another button on the remote to open the garage door and drove into the night.
As they drove Darian looked back into the rear view mirror to see Nakano stripping off his shirt. He turned his attention back to the road before him just as Phoenix spoke. "Eww, why don't you save that for the privacy of your own home?"
Nakano tossed his uniform shirt on the empty seat next to him and sat back in his white undershirt. "Hey, I just didn't want to go around town looking like an ice cream man, okay?"
Phoenix laughed. "You know that's the first funny thing you've said all night."
