Chapter 43
By Young Sage
Rangarion walked slowly up to the towering cathedral, just by looking at it he could tell that it was very old,(not as old as him, but probably very close) it stood 10 storys high, made out of a dark, almost black marble like stone, that gave off a slight shine when the sun touched it.
It was massive, with five turrets at each edge, and a huge steeple coming straight from the middle. Ran slowly walked around it assessing what was still left of the windows, at one time they had been beautiful stained glass, and some were amazingly still intact, Ran found it unusual though as he came back to the front of the Building, that three of the windows had been broken, not by time or wind he figured but by someone smashing them, or throwing something through them. (a pity) he thought to himself as he stepped through the towering double doors that lead inside, it took his eyes only a few minutes to adjust to the dank lighting, he found the cathedral intreiging, he had seen many temples, churches and muskes in his the time before his stasis, and none of them had ever looked anything like this, the others had had the usual pews, benches, and alters in them, with only a few alterations in each to accomodate the belief.
But this! This was uniqe in its standing, it was almost like who ever had built it had wanted a feeling of desperation, darkness, hoplessness.
He was thrust from his observations, when he saw something in one of the alters...a hole, multiple holes..
Ran rushed up to the alter and kneeled in front of it to get a better look at them, he immediatly knew that they hadn't been made by a pole, or some such object, they were to small, and percise to have been from something like that.
Slowly he traced along one of the holes with the tip of his finger.
"DAMN!" jumping up and back Ran looked at his finger, which was now starting to blister, wide eyed he looked at the hole marks again and then back down to his finger, something around the edges of the holes had been able to burn him.(a word was pushing against the back of his mind but he couldn't quite recall it)
"Chemicals", yes, that was it! He had heard briefly of them before being put into stasis, a substance that was man made.
Slowly shaking his head he tried to cast a simple spell that would increase his bodys metabolism, and heal the blister, Rans eyes shot up, his spell wasn't working on the blister...he knew that he had done it right because he could feel the slight exaustion that had become common with casting ether induced spells, yet there was no change to the blister what so ever...he couldn't be sure be he was quite sure that it was because of whatever had been on that hole, that he couldn't use his ether magic of the blister. He decided to look around a bit more before leaving.
After a few minutes he had assessed that some sort of battle had gone on inside this cathedral some time back, there where quite a few more of those holes all around the cathedral, along with broken benches and other various items.
He knew he should be leaving, the sun was starting to leave its peak and would be getting dark soon. Ran had started leaving when he saw something that took him by complete surprise, a small aura, at first he thought that he was seeing things it was so light and faint, but after a few minutes of close inspection he knew that it was real, the aura of a ether cast spell. But that was impossible, for a spell trail to be here this long! The spell must have been cast by a very powerful mage, an ancient no doubt, well he or she would have been and ancient had they been born in his day, now they were probably called many different things. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts Rangarion finally stood up and walked out, taking a short look over his shoulder to make sure nothing stood out, he closed the doors, and walked on looking for an acceptable place to make camp, as far away fromt the cathedral as possible.
