Chapter 45

By Shell97

To say that last night had gone a little crazy would be a supreme understatement, Anika thought as she rushed back to Cisia and her new companions. Hopefully that hired killer or whatever he was had been stupid enough to come alone.

As Anika sprinted up to Talen she found that Tetsuhara apparently had been foolish enough to fly solo. "Talehn, do you still have the gun I gave you?"

"Yes, why?" Talehn asked.

"Get it, we should be prepared."

Bryce had obviously overheard the tail end of Anika's sentence because he jumped in with a question of his own. "Be prepared for what, Anika?"

The new subject caught Phoenix, Paula, Cisia and Nakano's attention and Anika explained quickly. "It's probably nothing but it appears that we now also have the Syndicate to worry about."

"Probably nothing?" Phoenix laughed incredulously. "If you really believe that then your head's buried deeper in the sand then I thought. We should get moving, and it'd probably be better if we got rid of some of the dead weight," he added looking pointedly at Nelson.

Nakano snorted. "Like you should talk about dead weight. If you don't like the odds why don't you beat feet."

"Because I'm here to..."

"I know, I know, protect Cisia," Darian said wearily as he approached, dragging the unconscious body of Shin Tetsuhara with him.

"Is he dead?" Paula asked worriedly.

"No, he's still alive."

"So what's the plan, Chief?"

Darian's face was grim as he answered Nakano's question. "I'm going to catch up with an old friend."

A burning in his upper arm startled Kuri into consciousness. His lids began to descend groggily as he turned his head slowly to search out Mikan, instead he found himself looking into a pair of mercenary gray eyes. Panic rushed over Kuri in a wave as his body refused to respond to his instincts for escape. As he slipped into a drug induced slumber Kuri's last coherent thought was a cry for help.

Rangarion settled down for the night, or what was left of it anyway. He wrapped his thin woolen cloak more securely around his body as he mentally assessed the situation he found himself in. It would take a while for him to become accustomed to this new time. At least his regenerative skills seemed to be in working order. Whatever had prevented him from casting the spell in the cathedral was gone now.

Should've cast a spell to get rid of this rain, he thought as the fat droplets of water began to come down on his makeshift lean to. But messing with the elements was never a wise thing to do, it could attract all kinds of unwanted attention.

Suddenly Ran felt as if someone did have their attention focused on him. The figure of a boy stood in the rain not far from him. Ran opened his mouth to offer shelter to the lad when the boy simply reached out his hands as if asking for help, and vanished.

He gazed stupified into the downpour at the spot where the child had stood. There was nowhere for the boy to hide, the area surrounding the site of his disappearance held limited hiding places. Finally it dawned on him--astral projection. The boy must've been the same mage from his vision. It could turn out to be a trap, but Rangarion made up his mind to answer the child's call for help.
