Chapter 50

By Shell97

The silvery rain obscurred Darian's form as he walked off to face the Syndicate. Nakano couldn't help but admire his courage, even while the devastation his action had caused was evident in the fatigued lines on Anika's face. Nelson crouched down to help her off the ground, there would be time for grief later--right now it was time to survive.

Talehn joined him, and together they got her to stand. Talehn reassured the blond hunter, "He'll be fine, Anika. We'll meet you both at the airport."

Somehow Talehn's words galvanized her into action. "I'll see you three then, stay in one piece, pretty boy." Her next words were directed at Bryce, "Take care of them."

"Don't worry, I will."

As the trio walked off Nakano couldn't help but worry. When he had first seen Bryce he hadn't trusted his presense here, after all he had been a member of Lydon's anti-terrorism task force, the "terrorists" being anyone who dared to stand against the Ministry. Funny, he had always pegged Bryce's partner, Tasser, as the good cop in that partnership, the way he always came down to inquire about the welfare of the female prisoners made him seem so nice... but after hearing Bryce and Paula's story Nelson had to question his judgment, once again.

A reminder of how wrong he had been about John Lydon came back to haunt him, "He's a lot better than the guys you've been dating, Mia."

"I know Nels, he's cute but he gives me the creeps," she had said. A month and a half later she was dead. Nelson hadn't even realized that John was to blame until he found Mia's diary. Even now, just thinking about it turned his vision red and made his hands long for Lydon's windpipe.

"You gonna just stand there all night and wait for the Syndicate?" Phoenix asked, breaking Nakano out of his reverie.

Nelson's brow furrowed and he raked his hands through his closely cropped black hair. "I'm coming." He looked towards Phoenix, but the redhead was already moving to help Cisia to the car.

"Do you think they'll be alright?" Cisia asked Mark worriedly.

"They'll be fine. Bryce seems like a dependable guy."

Nakano stared in surprise at Phoenix as he continued to comfort Cisia, who knew that he had a compassionate side?

"Are you coming or what?" Phoenix yelled at him from behind the driver's seat. Phoenix, Anika and Cisia were already in the car.

Nelson started to run towards the car. "Hey, who said you could drive?"
