Chapter 73

By Shell97

The door to the core reactor slammed shut with a resounding thud. The large metal alloy door stood like a bastion of power.

Although she probably was already deep within the Core, Cisia's protests rang in their ears. Anika and Nakano rushed to the closed door in a fruitless attempt to rescue her, ignoring Lydon and the guards. Their uncalculated reaction could have proved fatal, if not for a young black man and a tire jack.

The tire jack dropped to the concrete floor of the garage. Almost sheepishly, the young man raised his hand in greeting. "I guess you're friends of Talehn?"

"Yes," Anika replied. Knowing there wasn't any time to waste she asked a question of her own, "Do you know another way to the reactor?"

His answer was hesitant, "Sure, I work there. My name's Sammy."

While Sammy gave directions to the reactor, Nakano bent down to check Lydon's pulse. To his disappointment it beat strong and evenly. The detective looked like he had merely chosen to take a nap on the ground. Nelson picked up the handgun that lay limply in Lydon's hand. He felt an urge to pull the trigger, but his morals got in the way. He couldn't kill John now, not while he lay unarmed and defenseless. So instead, he took some zipcord from his pocket and tied Lydon and the guards together.

Armed with the guard's guns Anika and Nakano took off in the direction Sammy had sent them. Sammy watched their departing figures and wondered if he was right in telling them how to shut down the reactor.
